Windows - Adjusting sound levels with volume mixer app

Problem

A customer using Windows has a problem with low or no sound on their computer.  Customers may wish to all the options for controlling sound in Windows to find a resolution.


Resolution

Pick the method below that woks best to you to adjust sound levels on a computer running Windows.

Using the mouse

  1. Right click Start button and choose the Run command.
  2. Enter the text below and click OK button:
SNDVOL
  1. In the volume panel adjust sliders for main volume or any applications you need.
  2. Click the mute buttons to mute or unmute a channel.
  3. When done click close button on top right of the window.

Using the keyboard

  1. Press WINDOWS+R to open the run command, enter the text below and press ENTER:
SNDVOL
  1. In the volume panel you will be able to tab through a series of volume controls and mute buttons starting with the main system volume.
  2. Use a single tap of up or down arrow to make small adjustments to sound level.
  3. Press and hold briefly to make larger adjustments to sound level.
  4. Screen reader or magnification users highly reliant on speech output should exercise cautio when adjusting levels not to push the audio so low it cannot be heard.
  5. For JAWS/ZoomText/Fusion product users press TAB to navigate to the FSSynth to adjust volume level for this software only.
  6. When done press alt+F4 or click the close button top right of the window.
