Microsoft - Battery condition report using Powershell

Problem

A Windows computer is experiencing reduced battery uptime without requiring charge.


Detail

Over time a laptop battery as a result of normal ageing process the battery chemistry breaks down through normal use.  When this happens some users may experience greatly reduced power on time before the laptop requires a charge.  In extreme cases this can be between 5 and 30 minutes.  

Resolution

Use the steps below to can check on the condition of the battery to analyse how much of its capacity has been lost.


  1. Click Start button or press the Windows key to open the start menu.
  2. Then search "Windows Powershell", right click and choose "Run as Administrator".
  3. In the Powershell window at the prompt type the following command below, then press ENTER:
powercfg /batteryreport
  1. Close the command window by clicking on the red X button (top right) and then open File Explorer by searching Start menu or press WINDOWS+E.
  2. In the File Explorer window click the address bar near the top or press CONTROL+L.
  3. Then type "This PC" without the quotes and press ENTER.
  4. Double click to open C drive, then Windows folder, then Systrem32 folder.
  5. Then scroll to the file "Battery Report" file and double click to open it.
  6. Battery status information will be displayed.

Please report the following values to Technical Support:

• Design Capacity
• Full Charge Capacity
• Cycle Count



Idea
Tip
Once battery information has been displayed it may be a good idea to take a screenshot for analysis using the hotkey SHIFT+WINDOS+S, then clicking the Powershell window.
