HIMS - Captive portal page redirection fails on Polaris /Braille 6 notetakers

Problem

When a Polaris or BrailleSense 6 user attempts to connect to public access Wi-Fi they are unable to access any Wi-Fi.  


Applies to

  1. Polaris/Polaris Mini
  2. BrailleSense 6

Resolution

Polaris web browser doesn't redirect to the captive portal login page and indicates there is no active internet connection even though the Wi-Fi-access point list who's that you are connected to the unsecured network. For these types of connection the user must authenticate using a web browser before WI-FI access is granted.

  1. Power on the Polaris and make sure you are in range of the public Wi-Fi network.
  2. Confirm that your wireless is turned on and that you are connected to your student Wi-fi.
  3. Then Press F1 to open the start menu, then navigate down to the "All Apps" section and enter the sub menu.
  4. Now navigate until you get to the "Chrome" web browser.
  5. When Chrome has opened it should take you to the captive portal login page to get you signed into your wi-fi.


Set Chrome as default browser

You may if you are wish set "Chrome" as your default app, instructions below.
To set Chrome as your default browser:
You may find it convenient if you use many these type of hotspot connections to set Chrome as your default browser.

  1. Press F1 to open the Star menu.
  2. Navigate down to "All Apps" and enter the sub menu.
  3. Then choose "Android Settings".
  4. Then select "Default" and then "Browser app".
  5. Then choose "Advanced" and then "Default apps".
  6. Then select "Browser app" and choose "Chrome" as your default browser app.
