JAWS - Change how numbers are announced

Problem

A JAWS user encounters a problem where the announcement of numbers in hundreds and thousands causes problems, for example when the text is a a phone number.

Resolution

JAWS can be set to speak numbers in several different ways such as single digits which may be preferrable for some users:

  1. Press JAWSKey+F2 and arrow to “Settings Centre” and press ENTER.
  2. Then press CONTROL+SHIFT+D for the default configuration.
  3. Then in the edit box type “number” and arrow down to “number processing”.
  4. Then press SPACEBAR to toggle to the desired method for speaking numbers:

• Controlled by synthesizer
• Single digits
• Pairs
• Full numbers

  1. When you have selected the desired number processing style press TAB to reach the “Apply” button and press SPACEBAR.
  2. Do the same for the “OK” button to dismiss the dialogue.
