ZoomText - Changing screen reader speech rate setting

Problem

You may wish to change the speech rate of the ZoomText reader tool.


Resolution

The speech rate can be controlled for ZoomText either globally or separately for the AppView reader tool.

Method 1 - Using a mouse

  1. Click the ZoomText taskbar button to open the main window.
  2. Click “Reader” toolbar and then click down arrow on “Voice” and then choose “Settings” in the menu.
  3. In the dialogue click the buttons in the “Voice Rate” spin box to push the speech rate up or down and click “OK” when done.
  4. If you wish to save your changes click ZoomText menu > Configuration > Save as default, then click “Yes” button on the overwrite prompt when it appears.


Method 2 - Using a keyboard:

  1. Press CONTROL+SHIFT+U to open the ZoomText interface.
  2. Then press the following keys in sequence Alt, R, V, S.
  3. Then tab through the dialogue box until you get to “Voice Rate” spin box.
  4. Use up or down arrows to modify speech rate.
  5. When done TAB to “OK” button and press SPACEBAR on it.

Change speech rate just for AppView reader using a mouse:

  1. Click the ZoomText taskbar button to open the ZoomText window.
  2. Click “Reader” tab and then click the disclosure triangle symbol on the AppView button and then choose “Shared Settings”.
  3. Click to activate the “Special reading rate” checkbox and then click the buttons in the “Rate” spin box to adjust speech rate.
  4. When done click “OK” to confirm.
  5. If you wish to save your changes click ZoomText menu > Configuration > Save as default, then click “Yes” button on the overwrite prompt when it appears.

Change speech rate just for AppView reader using the keyboard:

  1. Press the following keys in sequence ALT, R., A. H to open the AppView shared settings dialogue.
  2. Press spacebar on the activate the “Use special reading rate” checkbox.
  3. Then press tab to reach the “Rate” spin box and use the arrow keys to adjust the reading rate for the AppView reader only.
  4. When done press TAB key to move to “OK” and press SPACEBAR to activate it.
