Microsoft - Disable device driver updating in Windows 11/10

Problem

a Windows user encounters a porblem where a device driver keeps being updated to a known working drriver rendering the device innoperable.

  1. Windows 11/10

Resolution

It is possible to prevent Windows updating device drivers (via Windows Update) thus preserving the existing drivers that already work.  This can be useul if a problem occurs that a device is rendered inoperable when its work driver  is updated by Microsoft.

Windows 11

  1. Click Start or press the Windows key to open Start menu,
  2. Then search Change Hardware Device Installation Settings and open it.
  3. In the Window that pops up click the No (Devices might not work as expected) radio button option.
  4. Then click Save Changes button.

Windows 10

  1. Press Windows+R to open the run command.
  2. Enter the following and command then press ENTER: 

    sysdm.cpl

  3. Alternatively open Settings > System > About > Advanced System Settings.
  4. Click Hardware tab in the new window, then click Device Installation Settings button.
  5. In the new window click the option No (Your device might not work as expected) option.
  6. Then click Save Changes button, Windows User Account Control may prompt for authentication; click Yes or provide Administrator credentials to affect the change.
