JAWS - Disable eight dot Braille mode

Problem

A customer wishes to disable eight-dot Braille in JAWS.  This may be because the presence of dots 7/8 where the cursor is showing makes it hard for them to read the lower portion of the Braille cell if they are not used to eight dot Braille. 


Resolution


Method 1 – Using the keyboard

  1. Press JAWSKey+F2 and select Settings Centre then press ENTER.
  2. Press CONTROL+SHIFT+D to open the default settings.
  3. Then search for by entering number 8 and arrow down to “Display in 8 dot Braille mode”.
  4. Then press SPACEBAR to toggle this off.
  5. Then press TAB to reach OK and press SPACEBAR on it, then press ENTER to dismiss Settings Centre.


Method 2 – Using the mouse

  1. Click the JAWS button on the taskbar to open the JAWS window.
  2. Then click Utilities > Settings Centre.
  3. Click the Application drop down near the top and select Default settings.
  4. Then enter the number 8 into the search, then click on Display in 8 dot Braille mode”.
  5. Then press click the checkbox next to the option for Display in 8 dot Braille mode” to disable eight dot node Braille.
  6. Then click Apply and then OK buttons to save and dismiss the settings window.
