ZoomText - Disable recorder feature

Problem

An organisation with a ZoomText end user have security concerns about the Recorder feature in the software and wish it to be disabled.

Resolution

The ZoomText recorder features enable the end user to record text being read from the screen for use away from the computer later.  This feature may infringe certain security protocols in some secure environments.  Therefore disabling this feature may be desirable.  Please make the changes below to the registry to do this.

Registry changes

  • Path = HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Freedom Scientific\ZoomText()ZT year/version]\Settings
    Where [ZT year/version] is placeholder for installation being modified eg. 2022, 2021 etc.
  • Value = Disable Recorder
  • Value type = DWORD
  • Value data = 1


Detailed steps

  1. If ZoomText is running close it down.
  2. Right click Start menu and choose “Run” command and open “Regedit.exe”.
  3. Navigate to the following path:
  4. “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Freedom Scientific\ZoomText\version/year]\Settings”
  5. Right click in the right hand pane and choose New > DWORD value and call it “Disable Recorder” without the quotes.
  6. Double click the newly created value and enter 1 and click the OK button.
  7. Close down Regedit.exe and restart ZoomText.
