Dragon - Software freezes/hangs on first launch

Problem

When you try to launch Dragon but the Dragon interface does not appear or the software appears to freeze/hand loading the speech profile.

Resolutions

Consider the following:
  • Make sure you dictation headset is connected before starting Dragon.
  • Check if any third party dictionaries are installed which could elongate the load time under normal circumstances, if so wait up to 30 mins if Dragon is starting for the first time.
  • Turn off User Account Control (UAC).

If none of the above suggestions do not help try disabling the check for automatically for updates.


Method 1 - disable auto update

  1. Try to open Dragon as normal and wait about 10 seconds.
  2. Right click Start button, then click Task manager in the menu.
  3. In Task manager and click the Details tab.
  4. Right click "Agent.exe" and choose "End Task".
  5. Dragon should then load as normal.
  6. If the above steps allow Dragon to start successfully go to the Dragon bar then click Tools > Administrative settings. Then uncheck "Check for product updates".
  7. This should allow Dragon to start normally when you need it. You can manually check the updates if you need to.


Note
The solution above may also be applied to Dragon Medical edition if it is having trouble launching properly.



Method 2 - Disable start Up items

If the above is not working you can also disable some start up items:

  1. Right click Start button then choose Task Manager.
  2. Click  the Startup tab.
  3. In the list right click the following items and choose "Disable":

  1. Close Task manager and restart the computer and try launching Dragon again.
