Problem

A Focus v5 Braille display question has questions from IT regarding security and Focus displays.

Applies to

  1. Focus

Resolution

The answers here take the form of a Q&A format obtained with reference to security questions posed by a user.

Q: Does the Focus 14/40 have any type of operating system on it?

A: Not in the sense intended here. It uses its own internal firmware to support features and operation.

Q: Can the mini sd card in this device be used and read by another Focus 14/40 if that device is connected to a different laptop with JAWS installed?

A: Yes, but more importantly, it may be read simply by inserting it into the micro SD card reader of another Focus Blue 5th Generation Braille Display.

It is possible to permanently disable the micro SD card reader and Bluetooth radio for security’s sake. Contact Support for more info.

Q: How is the information store on the on stored on the mini sd card is in Braille – is it also encrypted?

A: The “braille” stored on the micro SD card, by the Scratchpad, does not use any braille code table, nor is it stored as any code. Instead, the actual keystrokes are saved and are stored in a proprietary file format.
