JAWS - Gmail "Message body" spoken whilst navigating in message

Problem

A JAWS customer is using the Gmail web interface in HTML mode, when they are editing a message to send arrow keys speak "message body" each time they are used.


Resolution

  • Users of JAWS 2022 should update to JAWS 2022.2207 (July update) to resolve the issue or switch from Gmail basic to normal interface.
  • Users of JAWS 2021 should avoid using build 2021.2111 ideally updating to JAWS 2022 instead.
  • Where neither solution above is possible consider the option of using an Email client such as Outlook is not possible, the solution below may help or use the workaround below as temporary sto gap.

  1. Open Google Chrome and then press JAWSKey+D for Dictionary Manager, if you are prompted to create a Chrome configuration file proceed to create this.
  2. When in the Dictionary Manager press TAB to reach "Add" button and press SPACEBAR on it.
  3. Then in the actual word edit enter: Message Body
  4. Then in the replacement word edit box press a single space and tab on.
  5. Then just tab through everything else until you get to OK and press ENTER.
  6. At the Dictionary Manager window press CONTROL+S to save your changes and then press ALT+F4.
