HP printers do not print using third party ink

Problem

A customer using an HP printer suddenly discovers printing does not work after installing third party ink.

Detail

Widespread reports have circulated regarding a recent firmware update for HP printers during May 2023 that disable printing completely if non HP inks are used.

First reports of this firmware being released are in March 2023 as reported in the Telegraph newspaper. Users discover that their printer no longer work.

The update introduces a feature called Dynamic security which is designed to enforce use of HP only inks. If a customer uses a non HP ink then they risk printing being disabled on their printer.

Guidance

Due to the above measures introduced by HP, Sight and Sound strongly recommend only using HP inks to avoid printing being disabled.

HP OfficeJet printers

Certain HP OfficeJet printers have been provided with an update that removes the Dynamic Security feature. Hoever, these printers are not generally sold among our customers so this option is unlikely to be avaiable:
