A customer with an Index V5 embosser wishes to use Index Direct Braille translation software.


Detail

Index-direct-Braille is a tool to quickly emboss Braille from simple PDF and Word documents if no other Braille translation software is available (such as Duxbury Braille Translator).

Set up Index Direct Braille

Please make the following preparation before you can use Index Direct Braille.

  • It is advisable to download the latest embosser firmware by visiting this link here:  here to get the latest Index Direct Braille features.
  • If the embosser has not been used before you may need to set up the Index V5 or V4 embosser for Index-direct-Braille. [Core format settings: select paper size, duplexing (single/double sided, saddle stitch format etc), Page layout (characters/line, lines per page, margins and page numbering)]. See setup instructions
  • Select your Liblious language and grade type in the embosser menu panel. [menu > braille settings/ > Liblouis settings.

Using Index Direct Braille (Windows 10/11)

  1. Right click or press SHIFT+F10 on your Word (97-2003 format) or PDF-file to open the context menu. [the document must be closed].
  2. Select Index-direct-Braille in the drop-down window
  3. Select your V4 or V5 embosser model from the window and press OK.

Using Mac OSX and Linux (Debian/Ubuntu):

  1. Open your document.
  2. Select File > Print in your preferred application.
  3. Select the Index V4 embosser in which you wish to emboss to and press "Print".
  4. The document has been transferred to the embosser from the computer using one of the above methods depending on your operating system. The embosser will begin to beep during the translation and formatting process. This may take several seconds up to a few minutes depending on the file size. Embossing will begin directly after.

Note
The current recommended maximum document size is 1000 pages.


Note
In the case of any complex documents including tables, mathematics etc Index Braille then recommends the use of a third party Braille editor such as Duxbury Braille Translator.
