Laptop & Desktop – Change web browser start up page (Windows & Mac)

Problem

A customer wishes to change the page that opens when their browser is first starts in the Microsoft Windows or Mac operating systems.

Resolution

Below are instructions for changing the start up page for the most common web browsers supported in Windows or Mac.  Use the steps that match your installed browser, the instructions are the same for Windows and Mac platforms unless indicated otherwise.

Google Chrome

  1. Click to Google Chrome icon to start the browser.
  2. Then click the three dot menu symbol (top right) Settings.
  3. Scroll to 'On startup', then click 'Open a specific page or set of pages' link.
  4. In the pop-up window enter the URL of the intended start up page and click the Add button.

Safari (Apple Mac only)

  1. Click to open Safari browser.
  2. Click Safari application menu (top left) and click Settings.
  3. In the Settings dialogue click General category at the top.
  4. Then click the drop down control to the right of New Windows Open With and select Homepage.
  5. Then click the edit box to the the right of 'Home page' and enter the desired website URL.
  6. Then click to close the Settings dialogue.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Click to launch Microsoft Edge browser.
  2. Then click the three dot Menu button and select Settings.
  3. Then select ‘Start home, and new tab’ category on the left side.
  4. Under ‘When Microsoft Edge Starts’ heading click ‘Open These Pages’ radio button.
  5. Then click ‘Add New Page’ button. 
  6. In the pop-up window enter the URL of the desired start up page and click Add button.
  7. When done click to close the Settings browser tab and restart the browser, the intended start page should then load into the browser.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click to launch Mozilla Firefox browser.
  2. Then click the three line Menu button on the top right.
  3. Then click Settings in the menu, the settings tab will open.
  4. Click Home button in the left side.
  5. Then click the drown down control to the right of ‘Home Page And New  Windows’ and select ‘Custom URLs’.
  6. Then click the edit box to the right of ‘Home Page And New Windows’ and enter the web address of the desired start up page.
  7. The click the cross symbol on the Settings browser tab.
