JAWS – Speech distorted, chopped off or crackles

Problem

A customer may experience problems with the quality of the JAWS speech being distorted, cut off or crackling.


Resolution

Try method 1 or method 2 to address problems with JAWS sound.

Method 1 - Disable sound effects

  1. Open Start menu and search Control Panel.
  2. Press letter S until you reach Sound and press ENTER.
  3. Then press TAB until you get into the list of sound devices.
  4. Then use arrow keys to locate the sound device JAWS is using and press ENTER to open it.
  5. Press CONTROL+TAB to reach the “Enhancements” page.
  6. Press TAB once to reach the checkbox “Disable all sound effects” and press SPACEBAR on it.
  7. Press CONTROL+TAB TO reach the “Spatial Sound” tab if present.
  8. Then press TAB to reach the drop down and use cursor keys to move this to the off setting.
  9. Then press TAB until you get to OK button and then presss SPACEBAR on it to save youru changes.

Method 2 - Update sound drivers

Frequently a driver update for the audio adapter JAWS is working with will help updated drivers will be available from either of the following sources:
  1. Microsoft Driver updates
  2. Motherboard manufacturer website
  3. Computer system manufacturer website
