JAWS – Adjust typing echo


Problem

A JAWS user needs to adjust the JAWS typing echo setting to their preference.

  1. JAWS
  2. Fusion

 


Resolution

Typing echo is the name given to the feature in JAWS that says back the letter that has just been pressed on the keyboard or the completed word after pressing spacebar.   There are four settings for typing echo, these are:

  1. None – no feedback is provided when typing text is heard
  2. Characters – JAWS will speak each character as it is press
  3. Words – JAWS will speak the completely word only when pressing the spacebar
  4. Characters and Words – JAWS speaks each character and the completed word when spacebar is pressed

Temporarily adjust typing echo

For convenience press JAWSKey+2 on number row repeatedly until the desired typing echo to quickly change typing echo. this setting is not retained 


Setting typing echo as settings default

  1. Press JAWSKey+V to open the Quick Settings window.
  2. In the search box enter the word Typing and press DOWN ARROW to reach typing echo setting.
  3. Press SPACBAR repeatedly until you arrive on the desired typing echo setting which will be spoken by JAWS.
  4. Then press TAB key until you reach OK button, then press SPACEBAR. 

 


Note:
The JAWSKey will be either the number pad INSERT key on a desktop keyboard or CAPSLOCK key when set to laptop key layout.  For further information please see explaining the JAWSKey system.
