JAWS – Adobe PDF documents that used to read stop working

Problem

PDF documents loaded into Adobe Read that used to  read now do not read at all, and JAWS does not offer to OCR them.

Applies to

  1. JAWS
  2. Fusion

Resolution

If you have a PDF that is known to read but has ceased reading when it is opened consider and attempt to address the conditions below:

  1. Verify that the document is being loaded into Adobe Reader pressing JAWSKey+T should be sufficient to know whether you are in Adobe Reader but if in doubt press JAWSKey+Q to see if Adobe settings are loaded.  If the document does not load into Adobe Reader this may be the problem.
  2. Periodically when Adobe Reader is updated some settings may be re-enabled that can affect document reading.  Please check preference settings by following the steps below:

  3. From within Adobe Reader press CONTROL+K to open Preferences.
  4. Then press DOWN ARROW or use first letter navigation to jump to Reading category.
  5. Then press TAB to reach the drop down for Pages vs Document.  If it says Do Not Read Document this must be changed.
  6. To change he Pages vs Document setting press ALT+DOWN ARROW, then use arrow keys on their own to select either Read The Entire Document or Only Read The currently Visible page.
  7. Then press SHIFT+TAB to go back to the category list and press down arrow or first letter navigation to Security (Enhanced).
  8. Then press TAB to reach the option Enable Protected Mode At Startup and press SPACEBAR to uncheck it.
  9. Then TAB through to OK button and press ENTER on it.
  10. Close Adobe Reader and then reopen with a document to test if this has fixed the problem.
