JAWS announcing autocorrect prompt in Word or Outlook document

Problem

When navigating a document a JAWS user may enouncter messages about using the hotkey alt+shift+f10 and “Display a menu or message for an available action”. These messages notify as a result of autocorrect detection being enabled.

Explanation

Both Microsoft Word and Outlook email client use a system of autocorrect to keyed in output such as capitalising the beginning of a sentence. JAWS can notify of these changes and the prompt alerts the user to this and provide the alt+shift+F10 hotkey to enable selection of autocorrection. If the user finds this distracting it can be turned off.

Resolution

  1. Whilst in Word or Outlook press JAWSKey+V to open Quick Settings.
  2. Then search “Autocorrect Detection” without the quotes and down arrow to the result.
  3. Then press spacebar to toggle this feature off.
  4. Then TAB to OK button and press spacebar.

You can also disable autocorrect in Microsoft Word for JAWS users's who do not want it on.
