JAWS – Braille display set up
Problem
You need to set up a Braille display with JAWS.
Applies to
- JAWS/Fusion
Resolution
The JAWS screen reader may be used with a variety of Supported
Braille Displays among which are Freedom Scientific’s own Focus range.
Installation requirements (JAWS and Focus Braille displays)
JAWS has out of the box support built in for Focus Braille displays, just physicaconnect a USB lead from computer to the target display. JAWS detects the presence of the display to provide Braille output along with speech.
Installation requirements (3rd party Braille displays)
For third party Braille displays a little prior set up is requirement to make these work provided they meet the requirements below:
- The target Braille must be supported by JAWS please see supported JAWS Braille displays.
- A USB driver package must be obtained from the Braille
display manufacturer website and installed on the computer system prior to connection.
- The Braille Display must then be set up in JAWS via the
JAWS windows. Open Utilities > Synthesizer
and Braille Manager, the target Braille display may then be selected for
install into JAWS.
- JAWS then must be restarted to allow it to work with the
Braille display. If the error ‘could not
load Braille driver’ is posted at JAWS startup this generally indicates a
communication problem between JAWS and the Braille display device.
