JAWS - Braille driver error after using Narrator with Focus display

Problem

A JAWS Braille display user may encounter a problem with getting Braille from JAWS if they have previously used their Focus display with the Windows Narrator screen reader.  When started JAWS provides no Braille output. 


Resolution

If a focus display is used with Narrator screen reader a condition is known to exist where Narrator having used the display for output causes the display to no longer appear to be available for JAWS.  


Removing Braille support for Narrator

If certain you do not need Braille support in Narrator use the steps below to disable Narrator's support for Braille

Using a mouse

  1. Right click Start button and choose "Apps and Features".
  2. n "Apps and Features" choose "Optional Features".
  3. In the list click “Accessibility Braille Support” and then click "Remove" button.
  4. if JAWS is running shut it down, then disconnect and reconnect the USB for the Braille display.
  5. Then restart JAWS and Braille should now be working with JAWS.

Using the keyboard

  1. Press Windows key to open the Start menu, then search Device Manager and press ENTER launch the result.
  2. Press the TAB key to navigate to the devices tree view.
  3. Press the DOWN ARROW key to navigate to (LibUSB) (WinUSB) devices, and then press the RIGHT ARROW key to expand it.
  4. Press the DOWN ARROW key once to navigate to LibUSB-1.0: Freedom Scientific Focus Blue.
  5. Press the DELETE key. A dialog message opens.
  6. Press the SPACEBAR key to check the box titled, “Delete the driver software for this device”.
  7. Choose the Uninstall button.
  8. After the uninstall process finishes, there is a small chance that a message will appear to restart the computer. If so, restart the computer as recommended. If not, simply unplug the Braille display, wait 5 seconds, then plug it back in.

Other potential problem causes

Please check that the Braille display is properly connected via USB to the computer or try another cable.  Then try starting JAWS again.  Furhter information can be found in Freedom Scientific TSN Bulletin 1717.
