JAWS - Change to keyboard processing to fix problem in another keyboard based application

Problem

A JAWS user encounters a problem where JAWS changes the behaviour of another keyboard based application such as a text expander or password manager that impacts negatively on that app.

Resolution

JAWS and Fusion products directly capture and hook keystrokes to function correctly. A recent development introduced in JAWS version 2023.2306 may cause some problems for customers with certain software.  Please see relevant information below.


Types of software that may be affected

  • A a text expander/replacement software.
  • Footswitch software control eg. for audio typists.
  • A dedicated password manager software app.

Disable Unified keyboard processing

Please use one of the methods below to disable Unified Keyboard Processing below.

Using the keyboard

  1. Press JAWSKey+F2 and select Settings Centre.
  2. Then press CONTROL+SHIFT+D to open the default configuration.
  3. Then search “unified” and press down arrow to reach “Use unified keyboard processing method”.
  4. When the above is located press spacebar to uncheck the option.
  5. Then press TAB to reach the Apply button and press SPACEBAR, then press ENTER to close the dialogue.

Using the mouse

  1. Click the JAWS button to open the JAWS window.
  2. Then click Utilities > Settings Centre.
  3. Then click the Configuration drop down and select Default configuration.
  4. In the search box enter the word Unified then click the results “Use unified keyboard processing method”.
  5. Then uncheck this option in the right hand panel.
  6. Then click Apply, then OK button.
