JAWS – control spelling indication with sound behaviour

In Microsoft Word JAWS has a feature that allows it to indicate spelling mistakes using sound or speech. These settings can be adjusted to suit specific user’s needs.

Steps

  1. Open Microsoft Word and press JAWSKey+F2 to open the manager utilities list and select Settings Centre.
Tip

Pressing JAWSKey+6 on the number row will open Settings Centre directly

  1. In Settings Centre enter the word “Spelling” without the quotes.
  2. Then press down arrow to “Detect spelling while navigating” Then press SPACEBAR to toggle the setting to the desired option of the three; Off, Say Misspelled, Play Sound. This setting provides notification whilst you are navigating a document.
  3. Press down arrow to “Detect Spelling While Typing and use the spacebar to rotate to the desired behaviour; on/off by pressing SPACEBAR to check/uncheck the option.
  4. If you wish to indicate how many spelling errors appear on a line down arrow to “Speak spelling error count” option, press SPACEBAR TO enable/disable this option.
  5. When done press TAB until you reach “Apply” and press SPACEBAR on it, then press ENTER to dismiss the Settings Centre window.
