JAWS – Installing additional voices from the JAWS window


Problem

You wish to easily install additional JAWS voices from the JAWS window.

 


Resolution

The Add/Remove voice dialogue allows a user to easily add or remove any speech engines they wish.

 

Note:
In secure IT environments this feature may not work as expected dur to restrictions either on the internet connection or the computer workstation.  You may need to seek help from the IT Administrator and download/install the voices manually.

 

1.       Press JAWSkey+J or CONTROL+CAPSLOCK+J to open the JAWS window then do the following depending on how JAWS interface presents:

·       JAWS window:  press ALT+O then press down arrow and press ENTER on Voices and then use arrows to select Add/Remove voice and press ENTER.

·       JAWS context menu: Press DOWN ARROW to Voices and press ENTER then use DOWN ARROW to select Add/Remove Voices and press ENTER.

1.       In the Add/Remote Voices choose the language you wish to download a voice for.

2.       Then press TAB to reach the voice list and select a voice you would like to download

3.       Then press TAB to reach the Install button or press the hotkey ALT+I to install the selected voice.

4.       If you wish to audition the voice before installing it press hotkey ALT+P to play a sample.

5.       When done installing voices press TAB to reach the Close button and press SPACEBAR  on it or press ALT+C.

6.       Then you will be placed in the JAWS window from where you can go to Voices > Voice Adjustment to select any new voice and make it your default choice.

 

 

Removing a voice

Use the following hotkeys whilst in the Add/Remove voice dialogue to remove any voices not required:

 

·       ALT+R = Remove a selected voice.

·       ALT+M = Remove All Compact Voices
