JAWS – Add/remove vocalizer voices
Problem
A JAWS/Fusion user wishes to add or remove Vocalizer speech engines to provide access to differeent languages.

Please one of the steps below to install or remove a Vocalizer speech engine.
Install additional voices
- Open JAWS Window JAWSKey+J on desktop or CONTROL+CAPSLOCK+J on laptop.
- Then choose Options > Voices > Add/Remove Voices In the dialogue.
- Then press ALT+DOWN ARROW to open the drop control, then use arrow keys to select the desired language speech engine to install, then press TAB.
- In the list use the arrow keys to highlight the additional voice; press ALT+P to have a sample of the speech play.
- When you come across a voice you wish to install press SPACEBAR on it, you can in the same manner select more than one engine to install by pressing SPACEBAR to make additional selections.
- Then press TAB to reach Install Voice, then press SPACEBAR on it, alternatrively press ALT+I to install the speech engines.
- When done press TAB to reach Close button then press SPACEBAR on it or press ALT+C to close the window.
Removing additional voices
If you have installed a Vocalizer speech engine use the steps below to remove it.
- Use the steps below to remove a Vocalizer voice from the system:
- Open the Add/Remove voices window.
- In the dialogue press TAB to reach one of the buttons that remove speech engines, then press SPACEBAR on them or use the hotkeys below: to or use their respective shortcut keys to remove previously installed voices:
- Press ALT+R = Remove A Voice: removes a selected voice from the system. A selection dialogue will open allowing you to select a voice to remove.
- Press ALT+M = Remove all compact voices from the system. In the new pop-up window select Yes to continue with the operation.
- Press ALT+A = Remove all Vocalizer Expressive voices from the system. In the new pop-up window select Yes to continue with the operation.
Manually downloading/install voices
For customers in restricted IT environments it is advisabnle for local IT staff to carry out the following:
- In a browser open: https://support.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/Synthesizers
- On the page click the drop down for Synthesizer and choose Vocalizer Direct.
- On the page click the drop for Language, then select the desired voice language.
- Review the available download and click the corresponder button, the voice is downloaded.
- When the download has completed run the installers for each voice.
- Then restart the computer to finish installation, then select the desired speech engine in JAWS window >Options > Voices > Volce Adjust dialogue.

Note
Voices installed using the above steps can be removed using the Installed Apps dialogue in Windows 10/11.
