JAWS – Add/remove vocalizer voices
Problem
A JAWS/Fusion user wishes to add or remove Vocalizer speech engines to provide access to multiple languages.

Resoluition
Please one of the steps below to install or remove a Vocalizer speech engine.
Install additional voices
- Open JAWS Window JAWSKey+J on desktop or CONTROL+CAPSLOCK+J on laptop.
- Then choose Options > Voices > Add/Remove Voices.
- Then press ALT+DOWN ARROW to open Language drop control, then use arrow keys to select the desired language speech engine to install, then press TAB.
- Press UP/DOWN ARROW ksys to browse through the list of voices.
- Press ALT+P to to audition the currently highlighted voice.
- Highlight the voice name you wish to install then SPACEBAR to select it. If you wish to install another voice as well navigate to the other voices then press SPACEBAR to select them.
- Press ALT+I to install voices or press TAB key to naviate to Install Selected Voice anbutton then press SPACEBAR.
- When done press TAB to reach Close button then press SPACEBAR on it or press ALT+C to close the window.
Removing additional voices
If you have installed a Vocalizer speech engine use the steps below to remove it.
- Open JAWS Window JAWSKey+J on desktop or CONTROL+CAPSLOCK+J on laptop.
- Then choose Options > Voices > Add/Remove Voices.
- In the dialogue select the language, then select any voices using SPACEBAR that you wish to reove.
- Press ALT+R or TAB to the Remove A Voice button, then press SPACEBAR.
- Removal will then commence.
- When done press TAB to reach Close button then press SPACEBAR.
Note
- On systems where User Account Control is enabled you may need to confirm the action by select Yes button or providing administrator credentials.
- In some business and organisation settings the add/remove voices dialogue may not function due to restrictions placed on the internet connection.
Manually downloading/install voices
For customers in restricted IT environments it is advisabnle for local IT staff to carry out the following:
- In a browser open: https://support.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/Synthesizers
- On the page click the drop down for Synthesizer and choose Vocalizer Direct.
- On the page click the drop for Language, then select the desired voice language.
- Review the available download and click the corresponder button, the voice is downloaded.
- When the download has completed run the installers for each voice.
- Then restart the computer to finish installation, then select the desired speech engine in JAWS window >Options > Voices > Volce Adjust dialogue.
Note
Voices installed using the above steps can be removed using the Installed Apps dialogue in Windows 10/11.
