JAWS - JAWS Dictionary exception for Vocalizer unavailable

JAWS - JAWS Dictionary exception for Vocalizer unavailable

Problem

When a customer attempts to create a dictionary exception in JAWS specific for Vocalizer voices the entry is not listed in available synthesizers.

Applies to

  1. JAWS
  2. Fusion

Notes
Update
Problem still present with the initial build of JAWS 2025.

Detail

The JAWS dictionary is a mechanism to allow customers to correct the pronunciation of words they encounter that do not sound right using the dictionary manager.  Each speech engine behaves differently in pronouncing specific words, what works for one speech engine will not work with a different speech engine.  To avoid creating problems with multiple speech engines it is possible to specify the correction only apply to a specific speech engine being used.

Resolution

  1. Customers who only use Vocalizer voices (eg. Daniel, Serena etc.) will be unaffected by this problem.
  2. Those customers who use more than one speech engine, for example Eloquence and Vocalizer will find they can only restrict pronunciation modifications for Eloquence voices but not for Vocalizer.  Therefore any corrects they wish to make for a Vocalizer voice may affect Eloquence speech as well.
  3. This problem is with Freedom Scientific development for a fix in a future release.  This problem is current with the initial release of JAWS 2025.
