JAWS – Microsoft office ribbon accelerator keys do not always work

Problem

A JAWS customer using Microsoft Office applications find that sometimes when they use the Microsoft Office ribbon accelerator keystrokes, they do not always work or function as expected.

Applies to

  1. JAWS
  2. Fusion

Resolution

  1. The Microsoft Office ribbon accelerator keys may not work as intended if the ribbon is set to automatically hide the lower ribbon menu.
  2. Ensuring the ribbon is set to always show the lower ribbon may help resolve the problem, this can be done by using one of the method shown below.

Method 1:  Using hotkey

1.    Press ALT+TAB to focus on a Microsoft Office application.

2.    Then press CONTROL+F1 to toggle the ribbon view on or offi.

Method 2:  Using UI navigation

1.    Press ALT to open the ribbon menu on Home option.

2.    Press LEFT ARROW to navigate to File item.

3.    Then press SHIFT+TAB to navigate back to Ribbon Display Options sub menu.

4.    Then press SPACEBAR on Ribbon display options submenu.

5.    Press DOWN ARROW to Always Show Ribbon and press ENTER on it.  The ribbon will then always show regardless of whether focus is on it.
