JAWS – No File menu in Adobe Reader when pressing ALT key

JAWS – No File menu in Adobe Reader when pressing ALT key

Problem

When a JAWS or Fusion user presses ALT key they no longer hear the File menu pop-up they are accustomed to.

Applies to

  1. JAWS
  2. Fusion

Detail

Adobe are keen to swich users to the new interface and this no longer shows the traditional menu bar so when press alt focus does not move to it.  There is (for now) a way to restore the old Adobe Reader interface so that this interface can be restored.

Resolution

Below is a resolution for disabling the New Acrobat Reader interface which will restore the familiar File menu when you press ALT key on its own.

Method 1 – Disable the New Adobe Reader Interface

1.       Press ALT+F as a chord to open the File menu.

2.       Press down arrow to Disable new Adobe Reader.

3.       Then press ENTER on the Restart  button and Adobe Reader will restart in the old interface.

Method 2 – Enable the New Adobe Reader interface

1.       Press ALT+E as a chord and arrow down to Enable New Acrobat Reader.

2.       Then press ENTER.

3.       Then press ENTER again on the Restart button when the prompt appears.  Adobe Reader will then have restarted with the new interface.
