JAWS – Opening and reading a Microsoft Word file attachment for Outlook web app


Problem

A JAWS customer using Outlook Web app needs to access a Microsoft Word document attachment with JAWS.

 


Resolution

Below are two sets of instructions relating for Office 365 for consumers and Office 365 Business.  Choose the set that seem most appropriate to your Office 365 subscription.

Office 365 for consumers

1.    With your browser go to outlook.com and sign into your account.
2.    In the Outlook interface locate the message containing the attachment to be read.
3.    Press ENTER to open the email.
4.    Then press TAB until you reach the attachment drop down, then press TAB again to reach More Actions button and press SPACEBAR.
5.    Then use the arrow keys to select either of the two options below:

Preview (see note below)
Edit in browser
Edit in Word Desktop app
Download

6.    Then press ENTER on the selected option to carry out the selected option.  If you have a copy of Microsoft Word installed on the PC you can choose Edit in Word Desktop app upon which the browser will download the document and open in Microsoft Word.


Note

You can select Preview also but you will need to activate the Accessible Reading Mode to read the document as document preview will not speak the document.

 

Office 365 Business 

1.    With your browser open the Outlook web app and sign in.
2.    In the Outlook interface locate the message containing the containing the document attachment to be read and press ENTER to open the message.
3.    Press tab to reach the reading pane, then use arrow keys or TAB to navigate to the document attachment, then press TAB once more to reach More Actions button and press spacebar.
4.    Then use arrow keys to select desired option: 

Preview (see note below)
Edit in browser
Edit in Word Desktop app
Download

 

Note

5.    Then press ENTER on the selected option to carry out the selected option.  If you have a copy of Microsoft Word installed on the PC you can choose Edit in Word Desktop app upon which your browser will download the document so that it can be edited in Word. which may be the easiest option to work with.
