JAWS – Position on web page moves without command

JAWS – Position on web page moves without command

Problem

When using JAWS in a web browser the position of the virtual PC cursor appears to move without command from the user.

Detail

When browsing the web JAWS uses a virtual cursor to traverse the page currently loaded and resolve any text on the page into notional lines on a page.  This cursor acts with both speech and also Braille.  The position of the virtual cursor should stay located at the position it is left by the user.  However, if a page updates this can appear to change the position of the cursor without command resulting from dynamic page refreshes to display new or updated content.

Resolution

To fix this issue JAWS can be set to suppress any page refreshes so that they do not happen and prevent loss of position.

  1. With the page open press JAWSKey+F2 and then select Settings Centre.
  2. Then enter the word "refresh" without quotes into the search box, then down arrow to Page Refresh Filter.
  3. Then press SPACEBAR repeatedly until you toggle the option to Suppress All Refreshes.  Other settings exist so that you can control how often refreshes are allowed if the user would like to receive page refresh updates.
  4. Press TAB to navigate to the Apply button and press SPACEBAR on it and then press ENTER to dismiss Settings Centre.
