JAWS – Prevent JAWS announcing regions of a web page


Problem

A JAWS customer wishes to stop JAWS from verbalising different regions of a web page.

 


Resolution

Use the steps below to silence region announce or live region update announcements when browsing the web.

 


Method 1 - Disable web page region announcement by customizing web verbosity

These steps disable announcement of static page regions as the virtual PC cursor moves through them.

 

1.       Open the browser you normally use, then press JAWSKey+F2 then select Settings Centre and press ENTER.

2.       In Settings Centre search box enter the “web” without the quotes and press down arrow to select Web Verbosity, JAWS will announce what level web verbosity is set to.

3.       Then press F6 to land on the Web Verbosity drop down, make a note of which level is set and then press TAB key until you reach the button for the Web Verbosity that was set and press SPACEBAR on it to edit the Web Verbosity level.

4.       A new window opens with checklist, press letter R to reach Region checkbox and press SPACEBAR to uncheck it and disable completely.

5.       Optionally you can leave the item check and pick and choose some of the options below if you only want to choose to announce some types of region related message.

6.       When done customising press ENTER to dismiss the window.

7.       Then press F6 and then TAB to reach the Apply button and press SPACEBAR on it.

8.       Then press ENTER to dismiss Settings Centre window.

 

 


Method 2 - Disable Live Region update announcements

Use this set of steps if you do not want to hear ARIA live regions being announced automatically.

 

1.       Open the browser you normally use, then press JAWSKey+F2 and select Settings Centre and press ENTER.

2.       Then type to search “Region” without the quotes and press down arrow to Announce Live Region Updates, JAWS will announce if the option is checked.

3.       Press SPACEBAR to disable the live region update announcement.

4.       Press TAB to reach the Apply button and press SPACEBAR on it, then press ENTER to close the Settings Centre window.
