JAWS speech ceases shortly after start-up when using Vocalizer Expressive voice

Problem

After upgrading JAWS to version 2022 JAWS seems to cease speaking after a short while.

Resolution

One likely cause of the problem if the computer has been in use for some time is that a Vocalizer version 1.0 voice is being used. When upgrading to JAWS 2022 there may be a compatibility problem. The voice can be updated to fix the issu user the steps below.

  1. Press JAWSKey+J to open the JAWS window.
  2. Then open Options > Voices > Add/Remote voices.
  3. Then press TAB to reach the list of voices and use cursor keys to select the equivalent speech voice already being used as version 1.0.
  4. Then press TAB to reach the Install Voice buton and press spacebar to proceed with installation.
  5. Follow any prompts to continue installation, you may get a message saying that the version 1.0 voice has been disabled, this is normal.
  6. After installation go to Options > Voice adjustment and make sure the desired voice is set for JAWS.
