JAWS – Suppress startup wizard prompt
Problem
An IT technician may wish to suppress the JAWS Startup Wizard as some options if changed will require elevation of limited user which may not be considered desirable.
Applies to
- JAWS
Resolution
- If a user attempts to change the options for JAWS auto-startup this will trigger a UAC winow, typically in an organisation that will mean that users be prompted to supply credentials they do not have thus blocking any changes they wish to make.
- You can modify the Default.JCF file under the user’s profile and set the flag to disable the Startup Wizard in the configuration file:
- Open the folder path %AppData%\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2025\Settings\ENU in File Explorer..
- Locate and right click the file Default.jcf file then choose Open With > Notepad.
- Then locate the line DisplayStartupWizard=1, then replace 1 with 0 to disable display of Startup Wizard prompt as below:
DisplayStartupWizard=0
- Then save and close the file. JAWS will no longer prompt with Startup wizard.
