JAWS – Switching sound card to fix no speech issue
Problem
A customer may find that JAWS is silent after it has been
started.
JAWS is playing through the wrong sound device.

Resolution
A possible reason for JAWS being silent is because it is playing through the wrong sound device such as monitor speaker (over HDMI) or USB headset and through attached loudspeakers.
Method 1 – Using the keyboard
- Press JAWSKey+J when running as a window or context menu.
- In the JAWS window or menu select Utilities >
Soundcards, then select a different sound device. The selection will be remembered for the next
JAWS start up.
Method 2 – Using a mouse
For sighted colleagues or helpers you can change the setting within the
JAWS window by using a mouse.
- Click the JAWS icon showing in the Windows Taskbar or the
System Tray/Notification area; if
neither are available double click the JAWS desktop icon.
- Navigate to Utilities > Soundcards, then select a different soundcard.
- If neither taskbar button or system tray/notification arear icon shows double click the desktop icon to luanch JAWS.
