JAWS – Unable to use Youtube online comments

Problem

When using Youtube on Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome you are unable to enter comment.

Detail

When on a YouTube website one may navigation using quick keys E to move to edit fields or H to navigate headings. Then by doing so you will arrive at the “Add a comment” field. JAWS is expected to drop into forms mode to allowing typing but that does not occur and text cannot be entered. At this point the browser being used then may stop responding as well.


Resolution

This scenario has been tested on all three Windows screen readers and VoiceOver on the Mac and this problem is not a JAWS bug. Freedom Scientific have informed us this is a problem with YouTube problem that has been present since March 2023.


Workaround

  1. Press JAWSkey+Z to disable the virtual PC cursor.
  2. Tab to the comment field.
  3. Enter the comment text and then press TAB to and press SPACEBAR on the Submit button.
