JAWS – Use speech on demand to stop JAWS speech


Problem

A JAWS customer wishes to completely stop JAWS speech for a period of time until they need it without unloading from memory.  This may be useful when using Zoom or Teams on a video call and wish not to be disturbed by JAWS.

Resolution

Speech on demand is a feature useful to JAWS users where once enabled will stop automatic screen reading.  This effectively mutes JAWS speech unless one commands it to read using  screen reading hotkey.

 


Enable/disable speech on demand 

  1. Use the hotkey JAWSkey+SPACEBAR followed by letter S when you want to enable speech on demand, JAWS will then go silence.
  2. To go back to full speech press the same hotkey sequence JAWSKey+SPACEBAR followed by letter S.

The JAWSKey

This is a key on the keyboard that is a special shift key just for JAWS related functions it is in either of two places depending on the type of keyboard being used:

  1. If you are using a laptop keyboard with no number pad the JAWSKey will be the CAPSLOCK key t hold whilst pressing SPACEBAR, then follow with the letter S.
  2. If you are using a desktop keyboard the number pad insert key is the JAWS key.  To locate insert key on the number pad find the bottom row of keys, then find the right most key of the desktop keyboard, then go two keys to the left which should have you resting on a long horizontal key with a little space to the left of it where the arrow keys are.
