JAWS – Use FS Reader to access basic training

Problem

A JAWS customer needs to access JAWS basic training material that is hosted within the FS Reader application. 


Resolution

  1. JAWS includes approximately nine hours of self-paced basic training audio.text training material in DAISY format.
  2. This can be accessed within the FS Reader DAISY app supplied with JAWS and Fusion products.

Launching FS Reader

The FS Reader icon is available on the Windows Desktop and can also be searched from the start menu. Do either of the following to open it:

  1. Press WINDOWS+D to go to desktop and press letter F until you reach FS Reader and press ENTER.
  2. Press Windows key on its own to open start menu and type FS Reader, when you hear this result press ENTER.


Description of FS Reader window

The main program window for FS Reader is split into two parts side by side.
On the left side will be shown the chapters of a DAISY book you have open. You can use the text navigation keys to browse and read the text, where links are shown you can press ENTER to jump to where the link goes to.
• The right hand side contains the content to read.
• Press F6 to move between these two areas.
• There is also a menu bar to allow you access to other features and important to open a DAISY book.


Opening JAWS Basic Training

To load the Freedom Scientific DAISY training do the following:

  1. Press CONTROL+J to open the basic training book.
  2. Select File > Open JAWS table of contents in the menu.

Read and navigate text content

  1. With the book open you can use the basic text navigation UP/DOWN ARROW keys to read through the material as you would any other document.
  2. When encountering links in the document press ENTER on them to navigate to another part of the document.

Play DAISY audio

It is also possible to play audio of the training material to listen to:

  1. Press CONTROL+P to start audio playback or press CONTROL+P again to pause.
  2. You can skip to another location with cursor navigation or press ENTER on a link and restart reading from that position using the same hotkey the audio will keep up with the position in the text.
