Problem
A JAWS user wishes to study the basic training help material supplied in the FS Reader application.
Resolution
JAWS software is supplied with approximately nine hours of self-paced basic training material that comes in DAISY format. This material comes in both audio and text format that you can freely switch between when it suits.
Launch FS Reader
The FS Reader icon is available on the Windows Desktop and can also be searched from the start menu. Do either of the following to open it:
- Press WINDOWS+D to go to desktop.
- Press letter F until you reach FS Reader, then press ENTER.
Alternative method
- Press Windows key on its own to open start menu.
- At the search box type: FS Reader.
- Then press ENTER on FS Reader.
- If FS Reader is not curently highlighted press UP/DOWN ARROW keys to browse the list of it, then press ENTER.
FS Reader window layout
The main FS Reader window consists of the following areas:
- A menu bar at the top runs the whole width of the main window. Press ALT key to Enter the menu system then press UP/DOWN ARROW keys to browse the menu contents, then press ENTER to select an option.
- Below the menu bar are the two main sections of the FS Reader application:
Main textt area (right side) displays the text assciated with a help topic. Sometimes there will be links you can press ENTER on to jump to another topic rather like a web page. - Topics tree view (left side): This hosts a list of book topics that can be selected. Press F6 allows you to switch between the main DAISY text area and the topic tree view. When you are in the topics view you can use UP/DOWN ARROW keys to browse through the main book topics. Where a main topic contents items below it you can press RIGHT ARROW to open it, then press DOWN ARROW to go through the sub topics. Press LEFT ARROW to close an open book topic.
Open JAWS Basic Training
To load the Freedom Scientific DAISY training do the following:
- In FS Reader window press CONTROL+J to open the basic training book.
- Then use the ARROW keys to read the topic text or press CONTROL+P to start and stop audio playback.
Alternatively
- Press ALT+F to open File > Open JAWS table of contents in the menu.
Navigate topics
- After reading a topic you may with to switch to another topic; press F6 to switch to topics window.
- Then use UP/DOWN ARROW to select a main topic.
- Use RIGHT ARROW to open a list of sub topics.
- Then press ENTER to select a new topic, audio will begin playing, press CONTROL+P to pause playback and use UP/DOWN ARROW keys to browse the text instead.
