JAWS – Using the FS Reader app to access Basic Training audio tutorials


Problem

A JAWS customer who wishes to learn more about using JAWS screen reader requires information on using the FS Reader app.

 


Resolution

The FS Reader app is supplied with all copies of JAWS and Fusion which contains Basic Training DAISY Audio and text.  The customer may access additional training material via FS Reader and www.freedomscientific.com website. An icon for this app is shown on the Windows desktop for easy access.  The Basic training can be an invaliuable aid allow a user to follow along in using their JAWS along with tutorials.

 

FS Reader app Window description

The FS Reader window consists of two main areas one may navigate between them using the TAB key.  On the left is the book topic tree view where topic selects may take place.  On the right is the topic reading pane where text and links will be displayed, using the UP/DOWN arrow keys will navigate through the text.  Links to other pages or external websites may be presented that can be activated when focus is on them and you press ENTER key.


Starting FS Reader app

  1. Press WINDOWS+M to move focus to the Windows Desktop.
  2. Press the letter F until you reach the icon that speaks FS Reader, then press ENTER to open it.
  3. In FS Reader press ALT+F to open File menu.
  4. The UP and DOWN ARROW keys to locate the option Open JAWS Training Table Of Contents, and press ENTER.
  5. Focus will now be placed in the JAWS Training Contents page, you may use UP/DOWN arrow to browse the contents. 
  6. Press TAB will move to any links in the document, then press ENTER to open the topic.

 


Loading Basic Training books

  1. Whilst on the training contents page press F6 to switch to the tree view.
  2. Use UP/DOWN arrow keys to navigate the tree view.
  3. Press right arrow to open or left to close any branches, then press down arrow to access items contained underneath.
  4. Press ENTER on any item to navigate to choose a book topic, the audio will sound for the selected book topic.
  5. To stop playback press CONTROL+P, the same keystroke will resume audio playback.
  6. Use the UP/DOWN ARROW keys to browser through the text using synthetic speech.

 


Selecting another Basic Training lesson book

  1. From within the book topic area press F6 key.
  2. Then use the UP/DOWN arrow keys and ENTER to select another book topic to read it 

 


Access additional resources

  1. Whilst in the book reading area press F6 key to move back to the book topic tree view.
  2. Navigate to Basic Training DAISY Books, then press RIGHT ARROW if it is not open.
  3. Then press DOWN ARROW to move down to the item Addition Resources, then press ENTER.
  4. The addition resources page audio will begin reading, press CONTROL+P to stop playback.
  5. Then use the ARROW keys to navigate the text or using TAB to navigate through the links on the page.
  6. Press ENTER on a link to access the named resource.

Note
Please note some of the links will navigate to external websites and downloads.  When this happens you may need to press ALT+TAB to move back to FS Reader.
