K1000 – Crash during OCR recognition

Problem

A K1000 user encounters a problem when scanning a document the software crashes shortly after completing the scan.

Resolution

  1. When a scan is commanded by the user the scanner will then send the image to Kurzweil 1000 for OCR.  A porblm may arise when ABBY FineReader OCR engine analysis the text where K1000 is forced to quit without warning before the document can be saved.  
  2. Please attempt each resolution in turn until the problem is resolved.

Method 1 – Disable beta UTF8 support

  1. Press WINDOWS key and search Settings, then press ENTER.
  2. In Settings choose Time & Language.
  3. On the right choose Windows Display lanauge, then click the toggle button to disable the option: Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support.

Method 2 - Apply user ownership of ABBY folder

  1. Right click K1000, then choose Run As Administrator.
  2. Then run a scan and or attempt to open a PDF document to see if text comes in without the application crashing, if it does proceed onto the next steps.
  3. Open Windows Explorer to the following path:
  4. %ProgramData%\
  5. Then right click ABBYY folder.
  6. Then click Security. 
  7. Then click Advanced button, then click Change link to change ownership.
  8. In the new dialogue enter the user name, then click Check Names button.  If the user name is validated click OK to save the changes.
  9. Click OK, in each dialogue to close each window.
  10. Then re-attempt scanning with the new permissions to check this works now.

Method 3 – Set full control for ABBY folder

  1. Open Windows File Explorer to:  %ProgramData% then right click ABBYY folder, then choose properties.
  2. Then click Security tab, then click Edit button.
  3. Then select the user or group, and click Add button.
  4. Then enter the user or group name and click Check Names click, then click OK if that successfully validates.
  5. Then click the Allow checkbox for Full Control in the permissions list, then click OK buton.
