Laptop and Desktop - Checking SSD health

Problem

A customer needs to to check the SSD health in case of problems causing slow behaviour or data loss.


Applies to

  1. Computers that use SSD storage

Resolution

Please use the tools described below to get a read-out of SSD health.  If the indications show problems this may indicate SSD unit needs replacing.  Such tests are useful if the machine in question displays the following symptoms:


  1. The computer is slow even after conducting updates, malware cleanup and Windows repairs to help speed it up.
  2. Frequent unaccountable data errors after standard troubleshooting has taken place

Method 1 – using Command Prompt (Windows 10/11)

  1. Click Start menu and search for Command Prompt.
  2. Right click on the Command Prompt result and choose Run As Administrator.  A command prompt window will open.
  3. Type the command shown below and click OK or press ENTER:

    WMIC

  4. Then enter this command and press ENTER:

    diskdrive get status

  5. You will be provided with two potential results, the text after the = sign indicates what the error means:

OK = disk status OK
PRED Fail = Possible malfunction

When done take down the info and supply a screenshot if possible to technical support.

Method 2 – check SMART data using Crystal disk info

  2. Run the app to view status, check the overall disk health as an indicator.

Method 3 – Use AIDA64 Extreme

  1. Visit this link to download the app: https://www.aida64.com/downloads
  2. In the tree view on the left click AIDA64 Extreme > Storage > SMART
  3. Check the status on the right hand side for general status.
