Mac OS – Check if user can administer their Mac

Problem

A customer is unable to install or modify settings in Mac OS and needs to check if they have the correct permission.

Resolution

Users can generally be set up as able to administer their Mac os be set up with limited access.  If the Mac in question is owned by operated by the user most likely they should be administrator.  Use the steps below to verify if that is the case.

  1. Click Apple symbol then choose System Settings.
  2. Click Users & Groups, then click the information symbol to the right of the account name you are logged in under.
  3. In the new dialogue look for the setting “Allow this user to administer this computer” and check the toggle is turned on (even if it shows as greyed out).  This indicates the user can administrate the computer under that user account to carry out activities such as installing/removing software and granting access permissions.

Note
When the administer toggle shows greyed this indicates the currently logged in account has administration rights and this cannot be disabled from within the same account.
