Microsoft - Check windows version

Problem

You need to check which version of Windows is installed on a computer system.

Resolution

Since October 14th 2025 the current version of Windows 11 is supported and Windows 10 is no longer supported.  If you find Windows 10 installed consider updating to Windows 11 to have access to security updates.

Method 1 - Using a mouse

  1. Right click Start and choose Run command.
  2. Type in the program name WINVER, then click OK.
  3. A new window will be posted, look for the Windows symbol and text immediately to the right indicating which Windows version is running, then follow the appropriate steps.



Method 2 - Using the keyboard (JAWS/Fusion users)

  1. Press WindowsKey+R to open the Run command.
  2. Then type in the program name below and press ENTER:

    WINVER

  3. Press CONTROL+JAWSKey+V to hear the Windows version spoken, or alternatively press JAWSKey+B and listen out for the Windows version reported in the copywrite notice in the dialogue.
  4. Press ENTER to dismiss the dialogue window.
