Microsoft – Enable auto-save in Office applications

Problem

A user would like to enable auto-save so that the Office application periodically updates documents being worked on.
 

Applies to

  1. Microsoft Office apps

Resolution

The auto-save feature for Office 2016 apps is only available when using Microsoft OneDrive to backup documents to the cloud.  Use the steps below to enable this feature.

Using a mouse

  1. Open or create a new document in one of the Office apps.
  2. Then with the mouse click the autosave toggle button in the top left hand corner of the window.

Using the keyboard

For those who must use the keyboard use the steps below:

  1. Press ALT key followed by LEFT ARROW and press TAB.
  2. Press SPACEBAR to enable the toggle to start auto save on the open document.
  3. If you wish to disable auto save repeat steps 1 an 2, then press SPACEBAR to toggle off the auto save feature.
