K1000 - Opens with no speech

Problem

When you launch Kurzweil 1000 no speech is heard. Loss of speech may also occur when you try to change voice in the settings dialogue.

Resolution

This problem can be casued by the presence of incompatible speech engines that K1000 does not work with. The solution is to try to remove these from the viewpoint of K1000 to avoid speech being lost.

  1. Go to “C:\Program Files\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Diags” and run “SAPIReg.exe”
  2. You will be presented with a list of speech engines, and amongst other buttons, a “Remove” button.
  3. Use the cursor keys to select the voices listed below and use the “Remove” button on each you suspect to be incompatible.Click “Save” and then “Exit” to leave the application.
  4. Open “SAPI5Reg.exe” from the same folder.
  5. As above, remove any remaining Orpheus-related voices, then click “Save” and “Exit” buttons.
  6. Restart the computer and try Kurzweil again. Once satisfied that it is working, it should be safe to add back the Orpheus voices one by one, testing them to ensure that Kurzweil still works.
