ZoomText - Adobe Reader install and recommended settings

Problem

You wish to read documents in Adobe Reader with ZoomText but are unable to make the speech work with these documents.

Resolution

Adobe Reader is the recommended application for use with ZoomText to read PDF files.  Please use the instructions below to download, install and configure Adobe Reader correctly on a computer system to work with ZoomText.

Step 1 - Download Adobe Reader app

Step 2 - Set Adobe to be default PDF app

  1. Locate a PDF doument that is already on the system or use the link to download a suitable PDF file:  ZoomText - User Guide
  2. Open File Explorer to the location of the PDF document, for example Downloads folder.
  3. Whilst focused on the document press ALT+ENTER to open the document properties window.
  4. In the Properties dialogue activate the Change button next to Open With line.
  5. In the pop up list choose Adobe Acrobat DC or Acrobat Reader, this will associate Adobe Reader with all PDF files. 

Step 3 - Optimize Adobe Reader for use with ZoomText

In order that Adobe Reader delivers text correctly to ZoomText certain options may need to be changed.

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat Reader DC by searching in the start menu and opening it from there.
  2. Then select Edit > Preferences or press CONTROL+K for the preferences window.

The Preferences dialogue is a large group of settings split up into categories on the left side, click the matching category and then update the settings listed, then move on to the next category without clicking OK at the bottom of the dialogue.

Security (Enhanced)

  1. Then uncheck the option marked Protected mode at startup.
  2. Then Protected view radio button to Off.

Reading

  1. Set the Reading Order drop down to Left to right, top to bottom setting.
  2. Uncheck the option Override reading order in tagged documents.
  3. Then set Page verses document drop down to Read entire document.

Multimedia & 3D

  1. Set Preferred renderer drop down to Software.
  2. Click to disable Enable hardware rendering for legacy video cards.

Accessibility

  1. Enable Always use page layout checkbox and set the drop down to the right to Single page.
  2. Enable Always use page zoom setting and set the drop down to 100%.
  3. Ensure Enable Assistive technology support checkbox is checked.

Document

  1. [Optional] click to disable Restore last view settings when reopening a document.
  2. [Optional] click to disable Allow documents to hide the menu bar, toolbar and other controls.
  3. When finished with changing settings click OK button or press ENTER on the dialogue to update settings then close and restart Adobe reader.
