JAWS - Restart or shutdown of Windows 10 using JAWS

Problem

The Windows power options such as shutdown or restart are not immediately obvious to find.  


Resolution

There are two methods by which you can get to and execute power off or restart operations without modifying the system.


Method 1 - Using standard navigation

  1. Close all open applications and Windows press WINDOWS+D to focus on the Windows desktop.
  2. Press the Windows Start menu key or CONTROL+ESCAPE to open the Windows start menu.
  3. Press TAB key once to get to "Start List box" and then press down arrow until you reach "Power".
  4. Press spacebar on "Power" to access the sub menu.
  5. Use cursor keys to select the desired option and press ENTER on that option.

Method 2 -  Workaround to access the old restart/shutdown dialogue drop down

  1. Close all open applications and windows press WINDOWS+D to focus on the Windows desktop.
  2. Press the Windows Start menu key or CONTROL+ESCAPE to open the start menu.
  3. Then press escape to close this menu (but you will remain focused on the Start button).
  4. Then press alt+F4 and a dialogue with a drop-down menu asking what function is to be performed.
  5. Use the cursor keys to select the desired option and press ENTER to have Windows carry it out.
