You need to run a hardware diagnostic to check for hardware faults.

Resolution

Most Mac models purchased from late 2020 onwards will be Apple Silicon based hardware.  If the Mac has been purchased before this time it might be an Intel based Mac, If unsure start by identifying what type of machine it is.

Step 1 - Identify processor family (intel or Apple Silicon)

Apple computers belong to two processor families, If unsure use the steps below to identify the processor family to identify which procedure to use.

1. Start your Mac as normal and sign in if necessary.
2. Click the Apple symbol in the top left corner in the menu bar.
3. Then click “About this Mac” menu item. The following screen should show various details including serial number and Mac OS version.
   • If you see the phrase ‘Chip Apple M1’ you have an M1 Apple silicon Mac.
   • If you see ‘Processor’ and/or the name ‘Intel’ you have an Intel based Mac.

Step 2 - Preparation for running Apple Diagnostics

1. Shut down your Mac and disconnect all external devices except your keyboard, mouse, display, Ethernet connection (if applicable) and connection to mains power.
2. Make sure your Mac is on a hard, flat and stable surface with good ventilation.

Run hardware diagnostic on Apple Silicon Macs

1. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button as your Mac starts up.
2. Release when you see the startup options window, which includes a gear icon labelled Options.
3. Press Command (⌘)-D on your keyboard.

Run hardware diagnostic on Intel Macs

1. Turn on your Mac and then immediately press and hold the D key on your keyboard as your Mac starts up.
2. Release when you see a progress bar or you're asked to choose a language.

Reviewing and reporting results

When testing is complete, Apple Diagnostics will show the results, including one or more reference codes.
