Users with this combination of Openbook and HP OfficeJet 8500 series all in one units may experience problems trying to scan with this unit. This information is based on a specific user report/case where these issues have been discovered. Due to the nature of this being an issue in the field and not properly tested this information can only serve as a guide.
When scanning with Openbook an error is display and scanning cannot continue. The Openbook software can only use the TWAIN driver. It would appear that this driver is not particularly stable and may be susceptible to errors on given Windows configurations.
The message indicates that a software component in the driver is missing and thus the scanner cannot be driven resulting in no scanning.
Since Openbook software is highly reliant on the TWAIN driver as opposed to the WIA driver scanning will be non-functional if these error conditions exist on the PC.
There is no single resolution, the following is anecdotal advice based on a single case in which this combination of software is used.
Use of the HP OfficeJet 8500 series is not recommended for Openbook users on Windows XP based on the information we currently have.
If other HP branded units are known to use similar software drivers then similar caution should be applied to those units also.
Information on how Openbook and the HP OfficeJet 8500 series works with Windows VISTA or Windows 7.0 is not currently available.
In the case cited it has been possible to make Openbook and the scanner software driver to work correctly but only after completely rebuilding a PC in order to do it.
Other similar kinds of hardware units are available that have been known to work well with Openbook.
