Set up JAWS to announce indents in a text editor

Problem

You wish to have JAWS announce indents, this may be particularly useful to coders in some languages that use indents as part of language syntax.

Resolution

  1. Open the application in which you wish JAWS to announce indent in.
  2. Then press JAWSKey+F2 and select “Settings Centre” or press JAWSKey+6 on the number row instead.
  3. If you are prompted to create a configuration this may be because the editor being used does not have a configuration. Please accept the name given and press ENTER.
  4. In Settings Centre type “speech and sound” without the quotes and down arrow to “Active speech and sounds scheme”.
  5. Press F6 to reach the “Activate speech and sounds” scheme drop down list and press ALT+DOWN ARROW to open the list.
  6. Then arrow down and choose one of the indent schemes listed that seems most appropriate for the task.
  7. Then press TAB to reach “Apply” button and press spacebar, then do the same for the “OK” button.
  8. Your speech and sounds manager indent scheme will be active when you use the editor.
