SmartVision 2 - no speech in Play store

Problem

When attempting to access the Play store on SmartVision 2 mobile phone no speech is heard from the screen reader whilst navigating within the Play store app.



Note
SmartVision 2 is no longer sold in UK and has been superceded by SmartVision 3 which runs Android 11 and thus more suitable for customers today.

Resolution

• This is a known problem resulting from recent updates in 2023 to Play store app. Kapsys have reported the issue to Google but to date 13/02/2023 no response has been forthcoming from Google.
• A Kapsys patch is available via Application Update that attempts to work around the issue. However the patch does not fully resolve the problem and Kapsys have advised that the patch is the best they can do.
• If a customer wishes to install an app they can do so by connecting a Windows PC to remotely install the app using their existing Google Account (details below).

Method 1 – using application update patch

  1. Open Settings > Application update.
  2. If there is an accessibility update navigate to it and press OK to check this opeion.
  3. Then navigate to Update button and press OK.

Method 2 – install apps via connected PC/laptop

The steps below will allow you to install applications directly onto the SmartVision 2 if you have it connected to your PC or laptop as another means of installing apps.

  1. Using the supplied USB C cable connect the phone to your PC or laptop.
  2. The phone will prompt what method of connection, choose File Transfers option and press OK.
  3. Then open a browser and log into your Google account at this page: https://play.google.com/store/apps
  4. Once logged in search for your desired app to install.
  5. On the app page activate the Install button.
  6. A new screen will pop up asking you to select the device to install into, select your SmartVision 2. If you are unable to access device select this may mean that app is not compatible with the Android OS on the Smartvision 2 phone.
  7. You may during app install be prompted for your password again.
  8. Once all is install disconnect the phone, you will find the app under Applications on the home screen
