Microsoft - Starting Windows Narrator

Problem

A JAWS or ZoomText customer finds their machine starts without speech.  Starting Narrator can provide enough access to help troubleshoot or facilitate Remote Support.


Resolution

Use one of the methods below to start Microsoft Narrator screen reader.

Method 1 - Using hotkeys

  1. Press and hold the Windows key on the left hand side bottom row of the keyboard.
  2. Whilst holding Windows press the + sign key on the number row or the number pad plus on the extreme right on a desktop keyboard.
  3. If more magnification is required repeatedly press Windows+Plus sign to increase magnification to desired level.
  4. When you are ready to finish using Windows magnification navigate to the running Magnifier application and press ALT+F4 to close it.

Method 2 - Using the start menu

  1. Click Windows button to open Start menu, then type to search for “Magnifier” app and click to launch it.
  2. Click the magnifier power plus and minus buttons to adjust magnification to desired level.
  3. When finished using Magnifier click the red close button in the top right corner of the window to exist Magnifier.
