Static discharge reset procedure

Problem

A laptop does not appear to start (no lights or fan spin). There is no known issue with the power adaptor.

Resolution

Before continuing some points to consider:

  • Has there been any physical damage/liquid spillage occurred recently that may have stopped the unit working.
  • Is the power adaptor in good condition; check if there have been any issues with it recently like it not supplying power unless you hold the plug in a certain position.

Static discharge reset for Windows laptops with non-removable battery

  1. If the computer is powered on please shut it down as normal.
  2. Disconnect the AC adaptor from the laptop.
  3. Press and hold the power button on the laptop for 20 seconds (you should not see the laptop power up).
  4. Then reconnect the AC adaptor and power up.

Satic discharge reset for laptops with removable battery

  1. If the computer is connected to mains please unplug the laptop.
  2. Then turn it over and remove the battery from the laptop (if it is removable) using the clips that secure it.
  3. Note: If the laptop does not have a removable battery it may have a battery pinhole reset on the bottom of the case. Otherwise use the instructions below.
  4. Put the battery to one side leaving the laptop disconnected from power turn the laptop back over and press and hold power button for 10 seconds.
  5. Now reconnect only the power adaptor leave the battery to one side and attempt to power on the laptop.
  6. If the laptop powers as normal shut it down again.
  7. Now remove the AC power from the laptop and reinstall the battery, and only then reconnect the power again.
  8. Press power and the laptop should be powering up as normal with battery connected also.

Explanation
The Static discharge reset is not just a simple turn off and turn on procedure. It is intended to release static charge that appears between the batter and laptop electronics that may prevent power going to the laptop electronics or causing battery power related issues. The procedure is entirely safe and does not remove any data.
