Laptop & Desktop - Static discharge reset procedure

Problem

A laptop does not appear to start up or does not appear to charge when plugged into mains. 


Resolution

In normal use a static charge may develop that prevent the laptop electronics from receiving power.  Typically when this happens no lights display and laptop does not power on even when plugged in.  Please consider other factors that may be causing the problem before proceeding with the static charge reset.

  • Please consider if there has been any recent accidental damage such as drop or liquid spillage that may have impacted the laptop hardware.,
  • Please consider if there have been any recent problem with the power adaptor. Check if there are any bare or kinked wires or if the power plug needs to be held in a particular position for charging to start.  Any of these may be responsible for the problem charging.

Static discharge reset for laptops without removable battery

  1. If the computer is powered on please shut it down as normal.
  2. Disconnect the AC adaptor from the laptop.
  3. Press and hold the power button on the laptop for 20 seconds (you should not see the laptop power up).
  4. Then reconnect the AC adaptor and power up.


Static discharge reset for laptops with reset button

Some laptops such as those manufactured by Medion have a special reset button for this purpose.

  1. If the computer is connected to mains please disconnect the charger from the latpop.
  2. Then turn over the laptop so the bottom panel is showing and look for a pinhole reset button. 
  3. With a straightened out paper clip or similar gently press the button down for 20 seconds to perform the static discharge release. 
  4. Reconnect the power adaptor and press the power button normally this time.  If the laptop powers up and loads Windows the problem has been resolved.
